Tree care and innovation fuel management are valuable green topics.

16 07 2010

We will once again have the pleasure of joining with The Green Society of Granville this month for their July meeting. Come on Monday July 26th in the Granville public library at 6:30. Two topics will be presented to inspire the community in different areas relating to environmental awareness.

Brian McLoughlin, a problem solver for McCullough’s Tree Service Inc, located in Granville will give a brief presentation on the importance of properly maintained trees. Society organizer Roy Sabo stated that, “We are fortunate to live in one of the 3400 communities that are currently part of the Tree City USA program, yet correctly planned maintenance of trees is often overlooked by many of us, so it will be very beneficial to hear this presentation”.

The Society is very excited to have Andrew Conley from Clean Fuels Ohio visit and give Granville some insight toward green fleet’s management and advocacy. The Ohio green fleets program is designed to significantly reduce the emission and fuel use of business and government vehicle fleets. Launched in 2008, this program is composed of three core components: helping fleet managers develop green fleet policies tailored to their specific needs, hands on assistance in implementing the policies and the development of a statewide rating system to recognize fleets that have made measurable environmental progress. “I was very impressed with my first meeting with Clean Fuels Ohio. Their program to help communities and businesses save money and the environment is quite impressive”, Sabo stated.

The Green Society of Granville is a group of like minded individuals that share a passion for the environment as it relates to local issues. Topics include everything from recycling, single use plastic shopping bag elimination, pollution control, stewardship of public land, and wise expenditure of public funds in both the local government and schools with an eco friendly perspective. All subjects relating to sustaining or creating a positive impact for the environment are relevant for discussion. Everybody is welcome.

Being environmentally friendly takes many different paths.

17 06 2010

We’re joining together with the Granville Green Society this Tuesday.

The Green Society of Granville will hold its June meeting on Tuesday June 22, 2010 in the Granville public library at 6:30. Three topics will be presented to inspire the community in different areas relating to environmental awareness.

Maggie Barno of the Granville chamber of commerce will discuss the merits of shopping locally and the positive effect it has on our environment and community. Additionally Elaine Kent and Liz Sabo will address the return of Jane Goodall’s Roots and Shoots program back in Granville schools. “Roots and Shoots was active in our schools a few years ago and has taken a hiatus,  but with the recommendation of Green Society members we really want to see it return as an activity to help our students understand the global impact of local decisions”, said Roy Sabo organizer of the society. “Eileen and Liz were the past mentors of the program in Granville schools and bring with them the experience of running Roots and Shoots as well as fond memories of meeting Jane Goodall”, added Sabo. Lastly Greg Hartz of the Licking County Trails Alliance will present, “Helping to increase bicycle usage to and from school – How do we do that?” Greg is well known in the Licking County area as the “bike guy” and is the leader of the recent Tri-City Bike to Work Week. “Greg is so dynamic and passionate about bicycling, it’s contagious. After his talk you’ll want to immediately jump on your bike”, said Sabo.

Yummy vegan dishes at our vegelicious potluck in Newark!

19 11 2009

Thanks everyone for attending our vegelicious potluck in Newark yesterday! We got to try various vegetarian and vegan dishes and shared recipes, including mild and hot Mexican pizza, Cincinnati chili with vegan cheese, chocolate chip cookies, gluten-free apple sauce cakes and soy cheese cake with berry sauce! We were also very proud that it was a zero-waste party, which means we did away with disposables as much as possible. People who attended the potluck brought their own reusable plates, cups and silverware.

Some of our members have already started to share their recipes on our potluck event post, so make sure you click on that post to get their proven recipes! We have been receiving comments from people saying that they are interested in potluck like this, so we may be organizing another one in December or January! For those who are interested in joining us next time, please look out for our post on this website, our Facebook page or our LinkedIn group. The best way is to join our Facebook page to get frequent updates. :)

Our next event will be called “Raising Your Family Naturally” in December, 2009 (date to be determined) in New Albany, Ohio. This presentation will include topics on earth-friendly cleaners, non-toxic skin care, making cloth diapers and other helpful resources for parents. More details will be available soon on this website, our Facebook page and our LinkedIn group! See you all soon!

P.S. For those who wonder why we have products on the table, the group is raising money through sponsorship and eco-friendly products that carry a green message. All the proceeds go to the group for organizing future events for members, guests and the general public. Donation as small as $1 is also very much appreciated. Donation can be mailed to P.O. One Water – “Best of Festival” Award Winner

5 11 2009

As we mentioned in the previous post, there are two films in November that we want to invite you all to join us.  One is “Scientists Under Attack” and the other is “One Water.”  Both films are screened by the Columbus International Film +Video Festival from November 10-15 in Columbus, Ohio. We are posting the information for the documentary called  “One Water” in this post.

One Water screenshot

“One Water” is the winner of “Best of Festival” this year.  This film talks about one of the most important resources in our environment – water.

Filmed in 15 countries in both hemispheres, the film churns together stirring visual sequences, compelling expert commentary, hypnotic local music and a score performed by the world-renowned Russian National Orchestra to immerse audiences in a direct and exhilarating experience of all that water means to humanity. The film highlights a world where water is exquisitely abundant in some places and dangerously lacking in others, where taps flowing with fresh, clean water are contrasted with toxic, polluted waterways that have turned the blue arteries of our planet murky. One Water leaves audiences with a series of provocative questions that culminate in one that will impact all of our futures: is water a human right or a commodity? Through a starkly emotional journey, the audience is invited to bear witness and encouraged to recognize this major global crisis as his or her very own.

Date: Sunday, November 15, 2009

Time: 7:30pm – 9:00pm

Location: Canzani Center CCAD, 60 Cleveland Ave, Columbus, OH (corner of Cleveland and Gay Street)

Admission is $5, free with CCAD student ID. Parking is free in CCAD lots.
