We will once again have the pleasure of joining with The Green Society of Granville this month for their July meeting. Come on Monday July 26^th in the Granville public library at 6:30. Two topics will be presented to inspire the community in different areas relating to environmental awareness.

Brian McLoughlin, a problem solver for McCullough’s Tree Service Inc, located in Granville will give a brief presentation on the importance of properly maintained trees. Society organizer Roy Sabo stated that, “We are fortunate to live in one of the 3400 communities that are currently part of the Tree City USA program, yet correctly planned maintenance of trees is often overlooked by many of us, so it will be very beneficial to hear this presentation”.

The Society is very excited to have Andrew Conley from Clean Fuels Ohio visit and give Granville some insight toward green fleet’s management and advocacy. The Ohio green fleets program is designed to significantly reduce the emission and fuel use of business and government vehicle fleets. Launched in 2008, this program is composed of three core components: helping fleet managers develop green fleet policies tailored to their specific needs, hands on assistance in implementing the policies and the development of a statewide rating system to recognize fleets that have made measurable environmental progress. “I was very impressed with my first meeting with Clean Fuels Ohio. Their program to help communities and businesses save money and the environment is quite impressive”, Sabo stated.

The Green Society of Granville is a group of like minded individuals that share a passion for the environment as it relates to local issues. Topics include everything from recycling, single use plastic shopping bag elimination, pollution control, stewardship of public land, and wise expenditure of public funds in both the local government and schools with an eco friendly perspective. All subjects relating to sustaining or creating a positive impact for the environment are relevant for discussion. Everybody is welcome.

Being environmentally friendly takes many different paths.

We’re joining together with the Granville Green Society this Tuesday.

The Green Society of Granville will hold its June meeting on Tuesday June 22, 2010 in the Granville public library at 6:30. Three topics will be presented to inspire the community in different areas relating to environmental awareness.

Maggie Barno of the Granville chamber of commerce will discuss the merits of shopping locally and the positive effect it has on our environment and community. Additionally Elaine Kent and Liz Sabo will address the return of Jane Goodall’s Roots and Shoots program back in Granville schools. “Roots and Shoots was active in our schools a few years ago and has taken a hiatus, but with the recommendation of Green Society members we really want to see it return as an activity to help our students understand the global impact of local decisions”, said Roy Sabo organizer of the society. “Eileen and Liz were the past mentors of the program in Granville schools and bring with them the experience of running Roots and Shoots as well as fond memories of meeting Jane Goodall”, added Sabo. Lastly Greg Hartz of the Licking County Trails Alliance will present, “Helping to increase bicycle usage to and from school – How do we do that?” Greg is well known in the Licking County area as the “bike guy” and is the leader of the recent Tri-City Bike to Work Week. “Greg is so dynamic and passionate about bicycling, it’s contagious. After his talk you’ll want to immediately jump on your bike”, said Sabo.

Fellow Greeners Launch New Site

A member of OGS, Roy Sabo, is taking action in his local community to band together and make a difference in his immediate neighborhood. I’ve been seeing posts about bicycling to work and encouraging everyone to switch from plastic to reusable bags. We are going to be joining them this month and next for their gathers, so we can work together closely.

Hello Green People,

I would like to formally say Hello to you all. I am excited to be organizing this group. The group will continue as it has under Angie’s leadership; with monthly informational meetings and our focus on everyday steps to living greener.

I will greatly appreciate your support and advice while I am getting into the groove. If you have any suggestions for future events, wish to organize an event or see something that could be improved, feel free to contact me.

Recycle Your E-Waste at our Computer Recycling Event!

The Licking County Computer Society (LCCS) has been recycling computers for over the last five years. They were able to keep 25,173 pounds of electronic waste out of the landfill last September in Newark, Ohio. At the present time they are accepting old computers, faxes, printers, monitors, ink cartridges, batteries and cell phones, working or non-working. Televisions are not accepted at this time.

Ohio Green Specialists will be joining in to help with this event this year. The more help, the merrier! Whether you are going to drop off your old computers or volunteering your time to help with this event, we love to hear from you. If you are in Columbus and have just a couple of items you want to drop off, please leave a comment here and we can arrange to meet up with you to deliver those items to Newark. A Facebook event was set up for this, RSVP and let us know whether you will be part of this recycling event or not!

One item or a truckload of items are accepted. If parts can be recycled into a working computer, the refurbished units are donated to qualifying organizations and individuals.

$$$ Donations are needed to help with the costs, if you choose to help in that way.

Thanks everyone for coming out to the Ohio Green Specialists February event! We had some fantastic vegan food and discussion about buying in bulk. Eriyah Flynn and Bethany George will be posting some useful information and weblinks for those who missed this event. So, look out for our next posts!

Our next event will be on square foot gardening in Newark, Ohio. Snow in Ohio should be leaving us soon (keeping our fingers crossed) and growing our own food is a healthy and green way to live our life. We will be posting the information of our March event here and our Facebook page shortly. Hope you can come join us next month!
